What will be in severe short supply at least at the onset of the pandemic are the special office provisions and equipment that are required during the pandemic. Without them it will be difficult, if not impossible to get your staff to come to work.

And under Workplace Health and Safety Regulations, they would be well within their rights to refuse to do so.

The face mask was a common place sight during the SARS pandemic in Asia and the same will be true during the influenza pandemic. All businesses are strongly advised to stock up on enough face masks to see them through the first 6 to 8 weeks of the pandemic, allowing for between 3 and 5 masks per day per staff.

This number would allow for protective masks to be given to staff, visitors, heavy goods delivery personnel (who must enter the office), and for staff to take some home for their commute to and from work, and to give their families.

By definition, a face mask or respirator is a personal protective device that is worn on the face, covers at least the nose and mouth, and is used to reduce the wearer's risk of inhaling hazardous airborne particles.

Particulate respirators are also known as "air-purifying respirators" because they protect by filtering particles out of the air as you breathe. These respirators protect only against particles—not gases or vapors. Since airborne biological agents such as bacteria or viruses are particles, they can be filtered by particulate respirators.

Recent CDC infection control guidance documents provide recommendations that health care workers protect themselves from diseases potentially spread through the air (such as SARS, Avian Influenza or Tuberculosis) by wearing a fit-tested respirator at least as protective as a NIOSH-approved N-95 respirator.

NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) uses very high standards to test and approve respirators for occupational uses. NIOSH-approved disposable respirators are marked with the manufacturer's name, the part number (P/N), the protection provided by the filter (e.g., N-95), and "NIOSH". This information is printed on the facepiece, exhalation valve cover, or head straps. If a disposable respirator does not have these markings, it has not been certified by NIOSH.

You will need to offer all visitors a fresh face-mask at the office entrance area, as well as staff who feel sick, and if there is a need to go to crowded places or face-to-face meetings.

Also bear in mind people with respiratory infection symptoms should use a disposable face mask at all times to help prevent exposing others to their respiratory secretions.

Any face mask must be disposed of as soon as it becomes moist or after any cough or sneeze, in a sealed bag and into an appropriate waste receptacle. Hands must be thoroughly washed and dried after the used mask has been discarded.

Face masks will need to be changed frequently to be effective so expect on the outset of the pandemic for each employee to wear several per day. This may settle down after a week or two.

It is important that you do NOT buy cheap face masks as they will do very little to protect the wearer or protect persons from the wearer if the wearer is infected.
